Microdosing

Microdosing refers to the practice of consuming very small, sub-perceptual amounts of a psychedelic substance, without inducing the intense hallucinogenic effects associated with higher doses. Microdosing aims to integrate the benefits of psychedelics into daily life, potentially improving mental clarity, emotional balance, and productivity.

For someone new to psychedelic substances, microdosing is a safe way to become acquainted with their effects and benefits without experiencing intense hallucinogenic episodes. It can also be useful as a gauge to measure an individual’s sensitivity to unfamiliar medicines.

Using psychedelics in a large dose is like soaring through a meteor shower on a shooting star—intense, exhilarating, and unforgettable in its momentary brilliance. On the other hand, microdosing is akin to watching a sunrise day by day: each subtle shift in colors and light brings a gradual sense of renewal and clarity, eventually illuminating a brighter perspective on life.

Dosage and Schedule

Microdosing typically involves consuming about 1/10th to 1/20th of a recreational dose of a psychedelic substance. Common schedules include taking a dose every three days, or microdosing for 4 consecutive days each week. The most common substances used in microdosing are psilocybin and LSD. The protocol showing the most promise is the Stamets Neurogenesis Stacking protocol.

Although microdosing is sub-perceptual by design, sensitivity can vary greatly from person to person. Factors such as metabolism, medications, diet, sleep and stress level may affect sensitivity. In particular, usage of other substances such as DMT can increase sensitivity to psilocybin, while SSRI’s can cause desensitization. For information on finding the right dose, click here.

Benefits

There is evidence connecting microdosing with enhanced creativity, improved mood, increased focus and productivity, reduced anxiety, and better emotional balance. Recent discoveries have also shown potential long-term brain health benefits through neurogenesis and neuroprotection, particularly when combined with other medicinal mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane.

Possible Side Effects

Potential side effects can include mild headaches, fatigue, or slight changes in perception. Start with a low dose to gauge individual reactions.

Legality and Safety

Be aware of the legal status of psychedelic substances in your region and ensure you source them safely and responsibly. Due to the variability in sensitivity, we suggest that new microdosers take their initial dose on a tranquil day free of significant obligations.

Scientific Research

Current studies and anecdotal reports support the efficacy and benefits of microdosing, though more research is needed. Here are some direct links to databases and resources where you can find studies on microdosing and related topics: ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, ResearchGate

Integration and Support

Integrate microdosing into daily life by keeping a journal to track experiences and changes. We highly recommend a daily journal such as “How We Feel” or the “Dose” app to keep track of emotional wellbeing over an extended period of time. Seek support from communities or professionals experienced in psychedelic use (there are many online groups on meetup!). Like any healthy lifestyle change, a combination of healthy practices can synergistically contribute to better overall results, but this doesn’t have to be the case from the get-go. Once individuals experience the positive mindset improvements from microdosing, many find themselves naturally reducing unhealthy habits and adopting healthier ones.

Contraindications

Microdosing might not be appropriate for individuals with certain mental health conditions, those taking specific medications, or those with a history of substance abuse. We highly encourage speaking with your medical professional, or consulting with a trained psychedelic coach.

Mindset and Environment

Ensure a positive mindset and a safe, comfortable environment when microdosing to maximize the benefits and have a constructive experience. Remember that microdosing is not like macrodosing. Results will be subtle, gradual and long-term.
